Background Information

DescriptionTRIO, also known as triple functional domain protein, interfaces with cell surface receptors and small guanosine triphosphatases (GTPases) to regulate neuronal morphogenesis and synaptic function. TRIO is encoded by 57 coding exons (3097 amino acids) and contains several domains, including an N-terminal SEC14 domain, several spectrin repeats, two Dbl-homology-Pleckstrin-homology (DH-PH) Rho-guanine exchange factor (GEF) units, an Ig-like domain, and a C-terminal serine/threonine kinase domain. The serine/threonine kinase domain is presumed to be active but quite selective; both DH-PH Rho-GEF domains are enzymatically active. TRIO9S and TRIO9L are the major isoforms expressed in the mammalian cortex.
