Synonyms: Galectin-3/LGALS3 is a member of the β-bovine lactose-embedded lectin family. Galectin-3 has been implicated in several biological activities, including intercalation into the basement membrane glycoprotein laminin. Galectin-3 on the cell surface may be involved in homotypic cell adhesion and downregulated in colon cancer progression. This downregulation has also been detected in breast cancer. Galectin-3 downregulation may be one of many mechanisms by which cancer cells interact with laminin to promote cancer cell invasion and metastasis. Its activated invasive phenotype has been demonstrated in multiple tumor types. Galectin-3 has been detected in anaplastic large cell lymphoma, but not in different types of Hodgkin's disease or in R-S cells.
