Synonyms: Glutamine synthetase catalyzes the formation of glutamine from glutamic acid and ammonia in mammalian liver. In normal liver, it is expressed in stem cells around the center, but not in hepatocytes around the portal vein. Glutamine synthetase has been considered as a marker of hepatocellular carcinoma. Glutamine synthetase is expressed in most hepatocellular carcinomas, including 70% of early-stage hepatocellular carcinomas and 59% of low-differentiated hepatocellular carcinomas.
