Synonyms: Mammaglobulin is a breast associated glycoprotein that is a distant relative of members of the secretin family, which includes uteroglobin and lipophilin. Unlike other members of the secretory family, mammaglobulin mRNA is specifically expressed in breast tissue and has been shown to be a sensitive marker for the detection of latent breast cancer cells in sentinel lymph nodes and peripheral blood. The sensitivity of this antibody in detecting mammaglobulin in breast cancer tissue was up to 80%. When combined with other breast specific markers such as GCDFP-15, the sensitivity of mammaglobulin detection was up to 84%. The data suggest that detection of mammaglobulin plays an important role in the identification of metastatic primary cancer.
