Background Information

Full Nameglycine C-acetyltransferase
DescriptionGCAT (Glycine C-Acetyltransferase) is a Protein Coding gene. The GCAT gene, located on 22q13.1, is conserved in chimpanzee, Rhesus monkey, dog, cow, mouse, rat, zebrafish, fruit fly, mosquito, C.elegans, A.thaliana, rice, and frog. GCAT belongs to the class-II pyridoxal-phosphate-dependent aminotransferase family. 2 alternatively spliced human isoforms have been reported. GCAT acts as an evolutionary conserved aging-related gene by orchestrating an unexpected nonlinear impact of proteotoxic methylglyoxal (MGO) on longevity. GCAT is widely expressed in the pancreas, prostate, and other tissues. Diseases associated with GCAT include Phosphoserine Aminotransferase Deficiency and Palmoplantar Keratoderma And Congenital Alopecia 2. Among its related pathways are Viral mRNA Translation and Metabolism.
