Immunochemical staining of human HTR3B in human kidney with rabbit polyclonal antibody at 1:100 dilution, formalin-fixed paraffin embedded sections.
The 5-HT3 receptor is a ligand-gated ion channel that has five subunits, 5HT3A-E, coded by the genes HTR3A-E. The HTR3A-B genes are positioned on chromosome 11q23.1—q23.2 and contain 7 and 9 exons, respectively. The HTR3C-E genes are positioned on chromosome 3q27.1. The 5-HT3A and 5-HT3B subunits are approximately 44% identical in amino acid sequence and are encoded by two genes (HTR3A and HTR3B). 5-HT3A and 5-HT3B are expressed in several brain regions, including the amygdala, caudate, and hippocampus. The 5-HT3A subunit forms functional homomeric 5-HT3A receptors, while the other subunits cannot assembly into functional receptors alone. Instead they form heteromeric receptors with the 5-HT3A receptor.
